Inspiration for Brides and Grooms-To-Be

We're privileged here at Losehill House to take part in so many special days throughout the year. We know that planning a wedding, although exciting, can often be difficult. With so many colours, dresses, suit, cakes and first dance songs to choose from, no wonder it often takes over a year to get all those details just right.

We've been inspired by the weddings we've seen held here, and have set up a Pinterest board combining some of the great the themes that these weddings have displayed.

If you'd like to take a look, or join us on Pinterest, you can find our Weddings Board here.

Losehill House Suppliers Win Award

Our Orangery restaurant is known for supporting independent businesses by sourcing unique, high quality produce to use in our dishes. One such supplier that we've been using for a while is Cabrito Goat Meat, in Devon. Owned by James Whetlor and Sushila Moles, Cabrito Goat Meat do not breed goats; instead they take the billies from the dairy industry and supply them to restaurant, and so helping to end the industry practice of culling males at birth.

The business has recently won The Observer Food Monthly 2014 Award for Best Producer, and we're delighted to be the only Derbyshire restaurant serving this amazing meat. The kitchen team here at Losehill House, headed by Chef Darren Goodwin, have created delicious dishes with Cabrito Goat Meat’s produce such as ‘Slow Roast Leg of Goat with Pommes Boulangere and Grilled Romanesco Broccoli’ and ‘Loin and Shoulder of Goat with Melting Broccoli and Brock Hall Farm’s Joie de Chèvre Sauce’.

Our Vegetable Garden

A great treat this weekend to have our vegetable garden mentioned in the Mail on Sunday!

mailonsunday

As holders of the Peak District Environmental Quality Mark, our commitment to the Peak District is shown through our philosophy to use quality ingredients sourced from local Peak District businesses wherever possible.

This year, we've brought things a little closer to home with the introduction of a newly established vegetable garden. Darren Goodwin, our Head Chef, expressed the value that the vegetable garden brings, “The vegetable garden has been a great project so far. To be able to go out, pick the produce and then serve the vegetables to our guests just a few hours later has been fantastic”.

So far, the garden has yielded courgettes, baby carrots, broad beans and fennel, to name a few. These are served alongside other locally-sourced products such as meat from White Peak Farm Butchers in Tissington and eggs from Richard Bennett’s egg farm in Thornhill. Coming to the end of the first year’s season, the venture has proven viable and so our guests will hopefully be enjoying home-grown produce for years to come.

The event is to raise money to support the brilliant work that the charity do, and will be held on the 7th September at Losehill Hall YHA. It promises to be a fantastic day out, with headline acts from internationally acclaimed Tenor, John Hudson and Soprano, Deborah Norman taking to the stage.

If you're interested in going along, you can find out more information and book tickets on their website here.

Today's Wedding

Today we've had the pleasure of hosting a wedding at Losehill House Hotel. One of the exciting parts of hosting a wedding is seeing how each couple decide to decorate the hotel. The couple today had the great idea to hang flowers over our entrance door, as you can see in the image below.

This door is in fact the original door that was built in the Arts & Crafts style back in 1914 when the building was a farmhouse used by the CHA Walking Charity. The guesthouse welcomed people for 90 years until it was closed in 2001 due to the foot and mouth epidemic. The hotel you see today is here thanks to redevelopment by the previous owners.

Lose Hill and Win Hill

Our hotel gets its name from Lose Hill, the hill upon which we are based. At the bottom of the valley the land then rises up again to form Win Hill.

To uncover the reason for the two names, it's necessary to go back into the Saxon period of the 650s AD when the Kings of Mercia and Wessex on Losehill, and the King of Northumbria on Win Hill fought a great battle. Northumbria won hence the name Win Hill and Wessex and Mercia lost giving us the name Lose Hill and the name of the hotel.

Discover Great Days Out

When visiting the Peak District for the first time, it can be a bit daunting knowing where to start when planning your break here - there are so many fantastic things to do that it can be hard to choose.

A great way to plan your visit is to use the Peak Explorer app which is a comprehensive visitor guide detailing hundreds of things to see and do, towns & villages, attractions, outdoor activities, places to eat, shopping and Derbyshire’s famous well dressings. You can download the app for iOS and Android here.
